Last week I went shopping with my kids for new spring clothes. It was quite the Target spectacle. I hate their policy on limiting dressing room items to six, so I chose to find a nice quiet corner of the girls clothing department to change Olivia and Georgia. We had a huge pile to sort through and it took awhile because kids aren’t always “true to size” and neither is the Target clothing. I really had to try everything on… Read More »

I spend a lot of time at parks. In fact a lot of life’s lessons have happened to me while at a park. I think I have been to every park in Petaluma at least two dozen times. I know which ones have shade and which ones don’t. I know which parks only have baby swings and which ones are better for bigger kids. I know which parks have bathrooms and which ones don’t.
Years ago, when I worked in Marin at non-profit scholarship organization, there was a young college grad who got a job as an associate in my department. He was full of great ideas and I felt threatened by him. I think I was worried that he was going to take over my job or get more kudos than me. He was smart and because of my fear and insecurity, I found that he and I butted heads a lot.
I just got back from a trip to Puerto Rico with my husband without the kids. First of all, I am amazed that we even pulled it off. As I sat heavily sun-screened under a thatched umbrella, attempting to ward off the hot equator sun, I reflected on what it took to get us there in the first place: One generous mother-in-law, two gifted adult women babysitters/childcare specialists/goddesses, and two sets of aunts/uncles, and a solid schedule of “who does… Read More »

This past week I have been thinking about what it means to be new at something and how hard that can be for people; how hard that is for me. As a new Realtor in what seems like a sea of Real Estate agents, I have been humbled by a few rookie moves I made recently. It was humbling to have my Broker Manager come to my aid when my lockbox key wouldn’t work as I was showing a house… Read More »

Are you old enough to remember birthday parties in the good old days? The days of birthday parties BP (Before Pinterest). I remember them: Moms and dads would order a pizza and blow up a couple of balloons, which is all they could manage before they would get so light-headed they had to sit down, and they would bake a cake from a box. It was simple and effortless. There were no goody bags or giveaways; just Hostess, paper streamers,… Read More »

She’s baaack! The truth is she’s been back for a little while now. That pesky, negative, horrible voice of self-criticism and doubt that likes to appear out of nowhere. In an attempt to swallow me down her negative pit of despair, she blasts me with comments about my career, my parenting, my body, everything. She’s been hovering around my head again, buzzing around like those pesky Petaluma houseflies. I sometimes wonder if she’ll ever leave my side.
Harper is 11 months old. With each day she is walking with more confidence. She struts around the house, in a bow-legged wobble, arms out to the side for balance, and goes from room to room. If she doesn’t see me, she utters “Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma” as she toddles around looking for me. She is still nursing, just a wee bit each morning, night, and sometimes during the day, but only when she is sleepy, or else she bites me. I knew where he was going to be and thankfully I would have to go out of my way to see him. I was pretty sure that I could get through the holiday season without that uncomfortable awkwardness. But instead of avoiding him, I did the unthinkable,… Read More »

Ah, Thanksgiving. It’s the time of year when you just can’t wait to be with family and eat lots of turkey. Yeah. That. A week later and my fridge is still full of turkey leftovers. I like to make a turkey every year because I’m particularly attached to having turkey leftovers. Thanksgiving has always been my husband’s family’s holiday and since we don’t hold the meal at our house, we wouldn’t get any leftovers if I didn’t make my own.… Read More »
